Students interested in applying for a 2009 PLANET AEF scholarship can download the application from the PLANET Web site. The deadline for submitting applications to the PLANET office is December 1, 2008. Nine new Trailblazers have joined the list of experts participating in the Trailblazer program, an in-depth, personalized networking and mentoring opportunity. In addition, the program has expanded to include a new Educator Trailblazer category that is designed to give professors an opportunity to help other schools grow their horticulture programs.

The PLANET AEF is currently accepting nominations for its 2009 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award. The application is available online and must be submitted to the PLANET office no later than February 2, 2009. Computer-based certification testing offers convenience and flexibility
Patriot Landscape & Arboriculture’s Candace McDeone, CLP, took advantage of computer-based testing to achieve her Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) designation. “This is a great alternative to waiting for testing at an industry event in my area,” notes McDeone. “The testing center was both professional and efficient and getting my (unofficial) results on the spot was incredibly satisfying.”

Third Annual Drug-Free Work Week coming in October
From October 20–26, 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) will stage its annual Drug-Free Work Week, dedicated to communicating the importance of working drug-free in positive, proactive ways. Drug-Free Work Week is sponsored by DOL’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace program, but its true spirit is found at the local level in activities conducted by various organizations and in individual workplaces across the country. Students are eligible for a one-year complimentary PLANET e-student membership if they register and participate at the 2009 Student Career Days, are members of a school’s PLANET Student Chapter, or are students at a PLANET-accredited school.
